Selection Criteria
STIAS fellowships are open to self-proposed projects and those within long-term thematic projects. All fellows must reside at STIAS for their fellowship duration, with their only obligations being participation in daily lunch discussions and weekly seminars where fellows present their work.
The program also includes:
- Artists-in-residence
- Short-term fellows from public commentary and opinion-making spheres
- Young scholars who have completed at least one postdoctoral fellowship
Note: Postdoctoral applications are generally not considered unless they are within a specific agreement with the Volkswagen Foundation.
Fellow Selection Criteria:
- Level: Is the research at the highest academic level?
- Innovation: Does the project break new ground and promise new insights?
- Interdisciplinarity: Does the project draw from various disciplines and facilitate interdisciplinary discourse?
- Relevance: Is the project relevant to South Africa and Africa, and suitable for an advanced study institute?
- Feasibility: Is the methodology convincing and the research plan realistic? Is the applicant capable of delivering the proposed project?
