JAMB cautions parents against registering minors for UTME; JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) has issued a stern warning to parents against enrolling minors for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), emphasizing the importance of allowing children to reach the appropriate level of maturity before participating in the examination.

This cautionary statement was made by the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, in response to a legal case filed by Mrs. Ifeanyi Eke against the Board. Mrs. Eke’s lawsuit alleges that her 15-year-old daughter received unsolicited and inappropriate text messages during the 2024 UTME registration process.
In the lawsuit, Mrs. Eke has filed an N100 million suit against JAMB and three others before the Federal High Court in Lagos, citing the unauthorized text messages as a violation of her daughter’s rights.
Prof. Oloyede clarified that the source of the inappropriate messages was indeed from JAMB, but the sender was not an official staff member of the Board or the CBT (Computer-Based Test) center. Instead, the sender was identified as a co-student—an undergraduate at one of the universities.
He questioned the readiness of a 15-year-old to pursue university education, highlighting that current educational norms dictate spending six years in primary school, six years in secondary school, and reaching the age of 18 before being eligible for university admission.

“We will meet her in court, it is for the court to decide whether she deserves that money,” Prof. Oloyede stated firmly.
Regarding the unauthorized access to the underage girl’s telephone number, Prof. Oloyede explained that it occurred at the examination center during the registration process. He stressed that appropriate action had been taken against the center for allowing unauthorized individuals access and emphasized the need for strict adherence to security protocols.

Furthermore, Prof. Oloyede issued a stern warning that any examination center found allowing parents or unauthorized individuals near the screening area of candidates would face severe consequences, including removal from JAMB’s accredited center’s list.
Parents and guardians are urged to adhere to age-appropriate guidelines for UTME registration and to ensure that candidates meet the necessary maturity level before participating in the examination.
