About United Nations University Masters & PhD Scholarships in Sustainability Science:

UNU-IAS provides master’s and doctoral degree programs dedicated to sustainability, aiming to nurture future policymakers and researchers who will lead global endeavors for a more sustainable future.

The Japan Foundation extends the UNU Scholarship to outstanding applicants from developing countries demonstrating financial need.

Masters in Sustainability Science (2024):

The two-year Master of Science in Sustainability program equips students with the knowledge and practical skills essential for addressing sustainability challenges.

Employing an innovative, interdisciplinary approach, the program integrates methods and resources from natural and social sciences, as well as humanities. Intended for recent graduates, professionals, and practitioners, the program facilitates meaningful contributions to government, civil society, private sector, and international organizations, including the UN.

The program commences in September, requiring students to fulfill course requirements by July of the second year, accumulating a minimum of 30 credits. Students can select courses from UNU-IAS and other prestigious Japanese universities such as the University of Tokyo, Sophia University, International Christian University, and Yokohama National University.

Scholarships provided through Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) for Masters Program:

  • Monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY for living expenses (maximum 24 months)
  • Tuition fees fully waived for scholarship recipients
  • Travel costs, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance to be covered by the student

Eligibility Requirements for Masters Program:

  • Applicants from developing countries demonstrating financial need
  • Applicants with a current working visa in Japan are ineligible
  • Those seeking a second master’s degree at UNU-IAS are not eligible for the scholarship.

PhD in Sustainability Science (2024): The three-year PhD program in Sustainability Science aims to cultivate scholars who will emerge as key researchers in the field. Embracing an innovative approach to sustainability, the program focuses on enhancing understanding by incorporating global change perspectives, particularly related to climate change and biodiversity.

The program begins in September, with students expected to complete all course requirements by July of their third year, accumulating a minimum of 14 credits. Similar to the master’s program, students have the opportunity to choose courses from UNU-IAS and other leading Japanese universities.

Scholarships provided through Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) for PhD Program:

  • Monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY for living expenses (maximum 36 months)
  • Tuition fees fully waived for scholarship recipients
  • Travel costs, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance to be covered by the student

Eligibility Requirements for PhD Program:

  • Applicants from developing countries demonstrating financial need
  • Applicants with a current working visa in Japan are ineligible
