This accreditation from the national regulatory body follows closely on the heels of AUN’s prior approval to introduce a Bachelor’s degree program in Public Health. The NUC conveyed its approval in a letter dated November 13, 2023, signed by Dr. Abubakar M. Girei, the Acting Director of Academic Planning, acting on behalf of Professor Chris J. Maiyaki, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission.

The B.Nsc. Nursing Science and the B.Sc. in Public Health programs will be housed within the AUN School of Basic Medical and Allied Health Sciences. This school intends to introduce additional medical and health science courses in the near future. Dr. DeWayne Frazier, the President of the American University of Nigeria, highlighted these recent approvals as affirmations of the NUC’s confidence in the quality of AUN’s educational facilities and international collaborations.

President Frazier expressed appreciation for the NUC’s recognition of the critical need for high-quality healthcare facilities and the training of a new cadre of globally competitive healthcare professionals in Northeast Nigeria. He emphasized that the strength of the AUN Nursing and Public Health programs lies in their fusion of American and Nigerian curricula and clinical experiences, positioning graduates favorably for practice in both the United States, Nigeria, and other developing nations.

Launching the nursing program aims to provide sustainable solutions to address healthcare challenges in Northeast Nigeria. The initiative seeks to tackle the shortage of healthcare professionals, improve maternal and child health, empower local communities, and establish a sustainable healthcare framework for the future. The program will produce empathetic nurses who benefit from both the Nigerian and American educational systems, equipping them with advanced English language proficiency, thereby enhancing their employability with NGOs and other entities operating in the region.

President Frazier attributed the inception of the new programs to the vision of the university’s Founder, who continually seeks avenues for the university to be more impactful in the region, aligning with the needs of the local populace as a Development University. The AUN Nursing and Public Health programs will benefit from ongoing and prospective medical research collaborations between Nigerian and U.S. researchers.

In October, research teams from AUN’s School of Basic Medical and Allied Health Sciences, the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, and the University of Northern Iowa commenced extensive studies on Type 11 Diabetes Mellitus in select Local Governments in Adamawa State. Additionally, a team led by Dr. Jimmy Reyes from the University of Northern Iowa began a similar study in Iowa, with plans for information sharing and the testing of culturally sensitive diabetes self-management interventions in Nigeria and the United States.
