WAEC To Introduce CBT For Future Exams; The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is making significant progress in implementing the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode for its examinations. Patrick Areghan, the Head of National Office (HNO) at WAEC, revealed this in an interview with journalists in Lagos, as he prepares to conclude his three-year tenure on October 1.

Areghan emphasized that the introduction of the CBT mode was part of his vision for the council’s future. He acknowledged that the transition to CBT for practical and essay papers presented challenges, especially considering the availability of computer facilities, electricity, and computer literacy in schools.

However, he clarified that the council had made substantial progress and intended to begin with objective questions before gradually incorporating theory and practical examinations into the CBT platform.
He acknowledged that not all schools would be immediately prepared for CBT, and there might be a segmented approach, allowing some students to use the traditional pencil and paper mode.
Areghan also expressed his desire to see the complete digitization of WAEC’s operations in the near future. He noted that various sections of the council had already undergone digitalization, including certificate issuance, result checking, and result verification.
He envisioned WAEC becoming a technology-driven examination body and expanding its international presence, allowing Nigerian children in the diaspora to take the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) overseas.
Another achievement highlighted by Areghan was the successful launch of digital certificates, which can be easily accessed by candidates worldwide. He also mentioned the establishment of the council’s Digital Security Printing Press as a significant milestone during his tenure.
Areghan’s greatest achievement, however, was ensuring the successful conduct of examinations, timely release of results, and the distribution of certificates to deserving candidates, even during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
As he prepares to step down from his role, Areghan expressed confidence in his successor’s ability to build on the achievements and continue improving WAEC’s services.
