Eligibility
- The Scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international students.
- The Scholarship is for candidates enrolling in a doctoral qualification, i.e. a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), Doctor of Education (EdD), or Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD), at the University of Waikato.
- Candidates will normally be seeking to obtain their first doctoral qualification.
- Candidates should normally be intending to study full-time at the University of Waikato.
- Candidates who have socially compelling reasons for enrolling in the part-time study

- Entrance Requirement: All applicants to the University of Waikato must meet the academic and English language entry requirements. For some qualifications, faculties/schools of study may have additional entry requirements. All applications are reviewed on an individual basis.
- English Language Requirement: Applicants who do not speak English as their first language must produce adequate evidence of English language ability, typically in the form of an IELTS or TOEFL score. Scores may differ depending on the qualification sought. If English is not the applicant’s first language, he or she must provide one of the following as proof of English language proficiency:
- IELTS: Some certifications demand an overall band of 6.5 and a Writing band of 6.0, while others require 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band (7.0 overall with no less than 7.0 in each band for the Graduate Diploma in Teaching). The Bachelor of Teaching requires a minimum of 7.0 in each band. Master of Teaching and Learning (7.5). The English language competency standards for admission to certain qualifications are at the Dean’s discretion.
- TOEFL (internet-based): 90 with a writing score of 22 (100 for Graduate Law)
- TOEFL (paper-based): 577 overall including a TWE of 5.0 (100 overall and TWE of 5.5 for Graduate Law)
- TOEFL (computer-based): 233 including a TWE of 5.0 (5.5 for Graduate Law)
