LASU unveils new multipurpose smart ID Card for staff and students; On Thursday, December 28, 2023, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, introduced the revolutionary multipurpose Smart ID card for both staff and students of Lagos State University (LASU), marking a significant departure from the conventional single-functionality ID cards currently in use.

LASU unveils new multipurpose smart ID Card for staff and students
The unveiling ceremony witnessed the Vice-Chancellor and other university management team members showcasing one of the Smart ID card’s functionalities—serving as an Attendance Management System for large student classes. This demonstration took place just before the commencement of the Senate meeting on that day.
To facilitate the demonstration, an Attendance Management Device had been set up at the Senate’s Secretariat. The VC, accompanied by the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Prof. Adenike Boyo (Administration) and Prof. Folusho Omobitan (Academics), along with the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel FANU, utilized the device to clock into the chambers.
The Senate members lauded the Vice-Chancellor for transforming the vision of the Smart Card into reality and praised the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department for its role in the development. The usage of the card involves a simple tapping action on the installed device, which then displays the holder’s name and relevant information while recording their attendance.
Following the successful trial of the Smart ID Card, the Vice-Chancellor announced that the cards would be produced and issued in batches to users. The initial batch will include university management members, Senate members, deputy registrars, and newly admitted 100-level students.
Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin, the Director of ICT, explained during the card’s unveiling at the Senate Chamber that the new ID card would function as both identification for staff and students and an attendance management system for larger classes. Moreover, it is designed to operate as an ATM card linked to a bank account and powered by Interswitch.
Prof. Enikuomehin urged both staff and students to provide their National Identity Numbers (NIN) to expedite the activation and subsequent distribution of the card. The rollout of the first batch of the new Smart ID Card is scheduled to commence from mid-January 2024, ushering in a new era of multifunctional identification and attendance management at Lagos State University.
