The incident was brought to light through a video that was circulated online on April 3. The video showed a group of female JAMB candidates standing outside the venue of their mock exams, allegedly being denied entry for wearing hijabs.
JAMB has expressed concern over the issue and assured the public that it is investigating the matter. The board has stated that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination or prejudice against any candidate based on their religious beliefs or affiliations. JAMB has emphasized that its policy is to ensure equal opportunities for all candidates who are seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The alleged incident at the CBT center at Covenant University has sparked widespread outrage, with many people expressing their concerns about the need to respect the religious beliefs of all citizens. The issue has also raised questions about the role of religious institutions in providing CBT centers for JAMB exams and whether they should adhere to the policies of the board.
According to a statement attributed to Olayode Akeem, a parent of one of the applicants who went to the center with his child, university security officers barred candidates wearing hijabs from entering Canaanland because they were obeying orders from up high.
In a statement, JAMB stated that Covenant University denied sending such instructions to the guards and apologized to the affected candidates. It went on to say that when the school learned of the occurrence, its personnel rushed to the gate to save the situation and ensure that the candidates sat their exams.
JAMB also promised impacted candidates that they will be able to retake the rescheduled exam and stated that it would never tolerate any type of prejudice against any company or person.
The examination body also informed the public that the board would put in place the appropriate mechanism to ensure that such an issue did not arise again in the future.
