A gap year is basically taking a break from school, usually between high school and college, to do something different. It’s a chance to step off the academic treadmill and explore the world, work, or just figure out what you want in life.

I took a gap year before college, and it was life-changing. I traveled through Southeast Asia, volunteering and teaching English, which gave me a new perspective on life. It wasn’t all glamorous—there were definitely challenges, like navigating foreign cultures and dealing with homesickness—but it was incredibly rewarding.

I also took up a part-time job when I got back, which helped me save money for college and taught me valuable skills like budgeting and time management. By the time I started college, I felt more mature, focused, and sure of what I wanted to study.

A gap year doesn’t have to be about traveling the world; it could be working a job, learning a new skill, or just taking time to breathe and reassess. The key is to make it meaningful and purposeful. When I finally started college, I was ready to dive in with a clear mind and a lot more confidence.
