Two Kwara teachers escape death, one loses leg as vehicle rams them

Two teachers in the state of Kwara South Senatorial District narrowly avoided death, but one of them had to have her leg amputated after a car slammed into their path as they were walking home from work.

At an interactive session with union members led by Tunji Olawuyi on Friday in Omu-Aran, Tanimola Edungbola, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Irepodun Local Government chapter, confirmed this.

The Ekiti, Isin, Irepodun, and Oke-Ero Federal Constituency is represented by Mr. Olawuyi in the National Assembly.

On the All Progressives Congress’s platform, he is running for re-election (APC).

Educator Medinat Mohammed, 43, of Junior Secondary School (JSS) Amberi in Kwara’s Irepodun Local Government Area, and her colleague Funmilayo Akomolafe, 44, were rammed on their way home from work on Wednesday by a driver who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, according to Mr. Edungbola.

The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) recommended to Mrs. Mohammed for treatment after she promptly lost one of her legs, according to the NUT chairman.

He informed the crowd that Mrs. Mohammed is still receiving care at the UITH while Mrs. Akomolafe is getting well at the General Hospital Offa, and the union is now looking for financial support for the victims.

He claims that Mrs. Mohammed is teaching Social Studies while Mrs. Akomolafe is teaching Chemistry and Mathematics, two topics that are extremely significant and vital.

Even though they are responding to treatment, he stated that Mrs. Mohammed would need an artificial leg, but Mrs. Akomolafe merely had leg fractures.

The congressman who presided over the meeting expressed regret for the situation and called it really unpleasant.

As a result, Mr. Olawuyi donated N200,000 to the victims.
