The FG announces a salary increase for lecturers, but ASUU rejects the offer.; The federal government has announced an increase in the salaries of university lecturers, with a 35 percent increase for professors and a 23.5 percent increase for lecturers below the rank of professor.

This was revealed by Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education, on Tuesday, September 6, during a meeting with vice-chancellors and other university stakeholders.

The minister also stated that the 2023 budget will include funds for the revitalization of Federal Universities and the payment of outstanding areas of earned academic allowances totaling N150 billion and N50 billion, respectively. The funds will be distributed to the institutions in the first quarter of the fiscal year.

The leadership of ASUU and three other university unions on strike, however, rejected the offer, calling it “inadequate.”

According to the unions, the proposed increase is insufficient to meet their respective demands for addressing the challenges confronting the university system. A source close to the academic body also revealed that the union is seeking a salary increase of more than 100%.
