The administration of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has denounced the event that resulted in the murder of Okoli Chizoputam, a final-year student at the institution, over charges of stealing a phone.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, on Tuesday, April 11, the preliminary inquiry found that the student died due to a mob action after allegedly stealing a phone.
He called the situation “unfortunate,” and said the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, has formed a committee to investigate what happened.
Olarewaju stated that the mob activity was against the law of the country as well as University norms and that the incident was reported to the police, who have begun an inquiry.
