The National Examinations Council (NECO) has issued a stern warning to school proprietors and other stakeholders, urging them to avoid enrolling candidates for its exams by proxy. This warning was delivered in a statement from NECO’s spokesperson, Azeez Sani, in Abuja on Monday.
According to Mr. Sani, NECO has observed that registering candidates through fraudulent means often leads to identity theft, resulting in fake results being generated. In an effort to curb examination malpractice, the council has introduced several measures to combat impersonation during its exams.
Some of these measures include the use of biometric data capture devices, customised answer booklets, and the inclusion of candidates’ photographs and birth dates on original certificates. Additionally, the NECO e-verify platform, launched in 2023, allows for the online verification of certificates, helping to minimize fraudulent activities.
Mr. Sani emphasized that any certificate not verifiable through the NECO e-verify system should be regarded as fake. He also urged state ministries of education and school owners to ensure that only genuine candidates’ details are used during registration.
As part of its ongoing efforts to maintain integrity, NECO withheld the results of candidates found guilty of impersonation in the recently released 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) internal exams, reinforcing its commitment to eradicating malpractice.
