The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently intercepted significant amounts of drugs hidden in unconventional ways, including shoe soles and hair attachments, en route to the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe. The seizures took place at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and involved various illicit drugs aimed at international markets.
According to a statement from NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, 2,118 tramadol pills hidden in 13 pairs of shoes bound for Cyprus were confiscated on October 12th. The investigation led to the arrest of the sender, Okenwa Kelvin Uchenna, in Enugu, where another 380 tramadol tablets, cash totaling N968,880, and a Toyota Avalon were seized.
In a related operation on October 24th, NDLEA agents uncovered 293 ampoules of promethazine and pentazocine, along with 1.69 kg of cannabis and additional tramadol tablets hidden in hair extensions and shoe soles, destined for the US, UK, and Oman.
The agency also reported an extensive seizure of 26.25 million tramadol tablets and 508,400 bottles of codeine syrup, valued at over ₦16.6 billion, during a collaborative inspection with Customs at seaports in Lagos and Port Harcourt. This operation further revealed 10 million Toradol Benzhexol tablets and 28 containers of methamphetamine. A suspect, Tsolaye Eburajolo, was arrested in connection with the seizure of synthetic cannabis (Loud), weighing 28 kg. A bribe of ₦10 million was allegedly offered to NDLEA officers to release Eburajolo, which the agency retained as evidence.
In Lagos, officers raided a shrine at Alfa Beach, recovering 2,760 kg of Ghanaian Loud cannabis and arresting suspects Gbenga and Sunday Abiodun. Additional seizures on October 25th at an underground hideout in Lekki uncovered over 11,000 pills of tramadol and other controlled drugs. Similar enforcement efforts across Plateau, Abuja, and Edo states led to multiple arrests and substantial drug recoveries, including 640 kg of cannabis hidden among fresh vegetables.
NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) praised the agency’s sustained enforcement efforts and highlighted ongoing War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) outreach programs aimed at educating communities nationwide on the dangers of drug abuse. These programs have reached schools, places of worship, workplaces, and other community centers, reinforcing NDLEA’s balanced approach to both drug supply reduction and demand reduction.
