Mass Communication courses in higher education are divided by NBTE.
Mass communication has been divided into three categories as a field of study, according to Professor Idris Mohammed Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, on Saturday.
He added that students might concentrate in a particular area of mass communication, unlike in the past, which was divided into Journalism and Media Studies, Strategic Communication and Media Studies, and Film and Multimedia Production.
In remarks made on Saturday at the conclusion of a five-day review of the new course curriculum by significant stakeholders in Kaduna, Bugaje, who was represented by his Special Assistant, Mallam Ibrahim Bashir Bello, said that the courses would be taught at the Higher Diploma Level in all Technical, Vocational, and Colleges of Education Study Centers across the nation. He also urged the various Institutions to sponsor lecturers to update their knowledge on the courses.
Mallam Lawal Umar Maradun, chief professor at the Abdu Gusau Federal Polytechnic in Zamfara State’s mass communication department, praised the NBTE for the move and said it had provided some respite to the polytechnic lecturers, who may now focus on a specific area of specialization.
Mr. Jide Johnson, the resource person, indicated that the new curriculum had received professional criticism and would train Nigerian journalists in modern media techniques.
