Lagos To Charge Chrisland School, Others With Involuntary Manslaughter And Reckless Negligence.

According to the Lagos State Government, a case of involuntary manslaughter as well as careless and negligent conduct has been filed against Chrisland School, certain staff members, and a vendor in the death of a pupil, Whitney Adeniran.

Whitney Omodesola Adeniran, a 12-year-old student at Chrisland High School in Ikeja, collapsed on February 9, 2023, while participating in inter-house sports that the school had organized at the Agege Sports Stadium and was then taken by ambulance to Agege Central Hospital, Agege, Lagos, where the attending physician confirmed that she had been “brought in dead” (BID).

The Nigerian Police Force, with the assistance of other agencies, conducted a thorough investigation after being given the case.

On Monday, March 20, 2023, the file was sent to the DPP’s office for evaluation of the duplicate case file.

A prima facie case of involuntary manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts had been established against the school, several staff members, and one of the vendors, according to the DPP’s legal advice, which was released on March 23rd, 2023.

As a result, they will face charges of Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless and Negligent Actions in Contravention of Sections 224 and 251 of the Criminal Law, Ch. C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Information shall be submitted in accordance with the DPP’s legal counsel. On the Ministry of Justice website are Certified True Copies of the Legal Advice (lagosstatemoj.org).
