Justice Ugo resigns in protest at calls to “kneecap” democracy and claims that siding with Tinubu will result in “the death of Nigeria’s democracy”
Boloukuromo M. Ugo, a Nigerian judge, resigned from the bench in an unexpected and stunning action, citing demands from the executive branch that he believes would undermine the nation’s democracy. Justice Ugo stated in a statement that he could not in good faith remain silent on this issue since doing so would be the “death of Nigeria’s democracy.”
The nation is in shock as a result of his resignation. Concerns concerning the status of Nigeria’s democratic institutions have also been expressed.
In his statement, Justice Ugo said that he had been urged to “cripple the independence of the judiciary” by siding with a particular political figure, whose identity is commonly assumed to be Bola Tinubu despite the fact that he omitted to name him.
Additionally, he was urged to suppress evidence and to drop cases that would influence the outcome of the election. The Presidential Election Petition Court’s operations have been severely hampered by Justice Ugo’s resignation.
