From buckets on balconies to tanks on rooftops, rainwater harvesting is a common practice across the country, especially in areas with limited access to clean water. It’s free, seemingly clean, and feels natural. But one critical question remains: Is rainwater actually safe to drink?

      The answer is more complex than it seems.

      Why Nigerians Rely on Rainwater
      In rural communities and underserved urban neighborhoods, consistent access to pipe-borne water is often unreliable or nonexistent. For many, the options are limited to wells, boreholes, sachet water, and when the rainy season arrives—rainwater.

      Rainwater offers certain advantages: it’s soft, lacks the strong aftertaste of chlorine, and avoids the saltiness sometimes found in borehole water. For low-income families, it’s a financial relief, reducing the need to purchase water for everyday use like cooking, bathing, and drinking. However, what appears to be a clean and cost-effective option may not be as safe as it looks.

      What’s Really in Rainwater?
      Rain begins as vapor that condenses in the atmosphere. In its purest form, it’s clean. But as it falls, rain interacts with everything in its path—air pollution, industrial emissions, generator fumes, and vehicle exhaust, all of which are common in Nigeria’s urban centres.

      Once rainwater lands on rooftops, it may pick up even more contaminants—bird droppings, mould, rust, decaying leaves, insect remains, and sometimes even asbestos particles if the roof is made of old materials. These pollutants, though often invisible, can introduce bacteria, parasites, and chemicals into the water supply.

      Can Rainwater Be Made Safe for Drinking?
      Yes, but not without proper treatment.

      According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), untreated rainwater can carry harmful pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Giardia. These microorganisms can cause serious health issues if ingested.

      To make rainwater safe for drinking, experts recommend the following steps:

      Clean your collection surface: Only collect rainwater from rooftops that are free of rust, animal droppings, dust, or toxic materials.

      Use a first-flush system: This helps divert the first wave of dirty water, which often contains the most contaminants.

      Filter the water: Use physical filters to remove debris and particles.

      Disinfect: Boil the water or use chlorine drops, UV light, or water purification tablets to kill germs.

      Store safely: Use clean, tightly sealed containers and keep them in a shaded, cool area away from animals or pests.

      Even with these measures, health authorities recommend using rainwater as a supplementary source—not your primary drinking water—especially if other clean water options are available.

      Health Risks of Drinking Untreated Rainwater
      The dangers of consuming untreated rainwater are real and potentially severe. Health complications can include:

      Diarrhoea and stomach infections
      Typhoid and cholera
      Heavy metal poisoning
      Kidney damage and nervous system disorders (from long-term exposure)
      Respiratory and fungal infections (especially when water is stored improperly)
      Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

      What Experts Recommend
      While rainwater harvesting is not discouraged, experts stress the importance of safety precautions. Proper collection, filtration, and disinfection are non-negotiable steps. If rainwater must be consumed, it should be treated with the same caution as any untreated surface or groundwater source.

      Here’s a summary of expert recommendations:

      1. Install first-flush diverters to discard the dirtiest portion of rainwater.
      2. Use pre-filtration systems to trap larger debris.
      3. Always boil or disinfect rainwater before drinking.
