Ilorin Descendants Union Condemns Offensive Beer Advertisement

The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) has strongly condemned a billboard advertisement that portrays the people of Ilorin as drunks, calling it offensive and provocative. The umbrella sociocultural organization expressed its concerns in a statement released on Friday in Ilorin.

In the statement, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Nurudeen Ibrahim, the IEDPU called on relevant authorities to promptly instruct those responsible for the offensive advertisement to remove it without delay.

The advertisement in question, promoting a specific brand of alcoholic beer, is displayed on a billboard along Offa Garage Road in Ilorin. The IEDPU contends that the advertisement deliberately depicts the people of Ilorin as drunkards, using the phrase “to si e gege bi Omo Ilorin” in its message.

According to Mr. Ibrahim, this offensive portrayal is clearly designed to provoke the people of the Ilorin emirate. He emphasizes that the advertisement has crossed the boundaries of liberty and urges its removal to discourage any potential retaliation from concerned members of the community.

Mr. Ibrahim further states that advertisements that infringe upon the culture of a particular community should always be discouraged. He highlights that linking alcohol to the predominantly Muslim community of Ilorin through this billboard is a deliberate act of provocation.

The union appeals to relevant government agencies to take action in removing the advertisement, while cautioning advertising agencies to exercise meticulousness in their services.

Despite the situation, Mr. Ibrahim calls upon the people of Ilorin emirate to remain calm and peaceful, assuring them that necessary actions are being taken to resolve the matter.
