NUC orders the shutdown of all universities beginning February 22 in preparation for the 2023 general elections
The Nigerian University Commission (NUC) has ordered that all universities close on February 22, 2023, and reopen on March 14, 2023. This is a result of the general elections for 2023, which are set for Saturday, February 25, for the presidency and national assembly, and Saturday, March 11, for gubernatorial and state assembly elections, respectively.
A circular that was distributed to the vice chancellors of the various institutions had this instruction.
The following statement appears in the circular: “As Vice-Chancellors of all Universities and Directors Chief Executive of Inter University Centers are well aware, the 2023 General Elections have been scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 25, 2023, for the Presidential and National Assembly, and on Saturday, March 11, 2023, for the Gubernatorial and State Assembly, respectively.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Mal. Adamu Adamu, has ordered that all universities and inter-university centers close their doors and academic activities be suspended between February 22 and March 14, 2023, in light of the aforementioned and concerns raised about the security of staff, students, and property of our respective institutions.
As a result, this Circular requests that Vice-Chancellors and Directors Chief Executives of inter-university centers close their respective Institutions from Wednesday, February 22, to Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
