Members of ECOWAS have officially approved the design for the $15 billion Lagos-Abidjan Corridor Highway Development Project, a key part of the larger Dakar-Lagos Corridor.
The approval took place during a meeting held in Lagos, chaired by Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. The project, which aims to deepen regional economic integration, is still in its study phase, with detailed research, planning, and design ongoing.
The Lagos-Abidjan Highway project, initiated back in 2013, has received major funding from the African Development Bank. During the meeting, Umahi emphasized that the current discussions focused on finalizing the design as the project nears the stage where implementation can begin. The procurement process is expected to be initiated in the next ECOWAS meeting.
The project, scheduled to begin in 2025, will cover approximately 1068 kilometers, connecting five ECOWAS member countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic, and Nigeria. It will pass through eight border towns, starting at Eric Moore in Lagos and ending in Abidjan.
Ghana’s Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Boakye, stressed the importance of infrastructure like highways for economic development, citing how similar projects, like in the United States, boosted trade and tourism.
This highway is seen as a flagship project for promoting economic integration and growth across West Africa, and its construction is financed by the African Development Bank.
