ASUU Hits FG Again With Another Ultimatum

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued an ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, setting a deadline of September 6 to address their demands. This request was announced following a closed-door meeting between the union and government representatives in Abuja on Wednesday. The 21-day strike notice issued by ASUU is set to expire shortly after this deadline.

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed optimism that all issues would be resolved before the next meeting. He stated, “We have met to discuss and review all the issues. We have given the government between now and the next meeting to see what they have done. We believe in the interest of the Nigerian child and in protecting their interest if the issues are resolved.”

In response, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, announced the formation of a sub-committee to review the union’s demands and seek lasting solutions. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining stability in the education sector, stating, “For us in the ministry, we will continue from where we stopped from our earlier meeting and find ways to progress. We share with you the desire to have stability in the education system.

The federal government will continue to do what is right to have a good education. We want to ensure that our students remain on campus, and the government is committed to giving the university system the best it deserves.”

The decision on whether universities will shut down depends on the outcomes of the September 6 meeting. Additionally, Mamman announced the creation of an implementation monitoring committee for the NEEDS Assessment intervention fund for Nigerian public universities, addressing one of ASUU’s concerns.

ASUU’s demands include the release of revitalization funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, the release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
