Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced that the state government will implement a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for all state government employees. This decision was shared via a press release on Wednesday, signed by the Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong.
The announcement follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval three months ago of an increase in the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers.
In preparation for the implementation of this wage hike, Governor Eno has established a committee tasked with ensuring a smooth rollout. The committee, led by the Head of Civil Service, has been given a one-month timeline to submit its report detailing the steps for executing the new wage policy.
The committee is comprised of the following members:
- Chairman, State Civil Service Commission
- Chairman, Local Government Service Commission
- Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance
- Permanent Secretary, Department of Establishments
- Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning
- Permanent Secretary/Solicitor General, Ministry of Justice
- Permanent Secretary/Accountant General
- Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission
- Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Civil Service
- Director of Budget
- State Chairman, Joint Public Service Negotiating Council
- Secretary, Joint Public Sector Negotiating Council
- State Chairperson, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Akwa Ibom State
- State Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Akwa Ibom State
- State President, Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE)
The press release emphasized that this decision is a clear reflection of the Akwa Ibom State Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its workforce.
This development comes in the wake of some states gradually adopting the new national minimum wage. While several states have committed to the ₦70,000 minimum wage, Akwa Ibom State stands out for going beyond the federal mandate by committing to ₦80,000, showcasing its dedication to the well-being of its civil servants.
