A French student, Mathieu Vigier Latour, tragically took his own life after a failed beard transplant in Turkey. Latour, 24, had traveled to Istanbul in March for a €1,300 transplant, only to discover afterward that the procedure was performed by an estate agent posing as a surgeon.
The botched surgery left him with severe discomfort and burns, causing the transplanted hair to grow unevenly and at awkward angles, described by his family as “hedgehog-like.”
After the procedure, Latour began suffering from dysmorphic disorder, obsessing over the damage and entering a “vicious cycle” of emotional distress. A Belgian specialist who attempted to correct the surgery confirmed his scalp would likely never recover in the areas where grafts had been taken.
Heartbroken, Latour’s father is now advocating for greater awareness of the risks associated with low-cost health tourism. He hopes that sharing his son’s story can help prevent future tragedies, making it a tribute to his memory.
