FUTA Library Implements Student-Developed Software for Access Control; The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing library security and efficiency with the implementation of a software application developed by one of its students.

The software, known as TouchNut, was created by Daniel Adeniyi, a 400-level student from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Under the approval of FUTA’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, the library has initiated a pilot test run of the software to regulate entry, monitor activities, and streamline the borrowing process for students.

TouchNut, developed by Daniel Adeniyi and his team, offers an intuitive and user-friendly identification system to monitor library activities. It leverages an Intranet server that securely stores student information, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected from external access.
One of the major advantages of the software is its ability to track borrowed books, eliminating concerns for library staff about timely returns. The software automatically notifies staff when a book’s expiration date approaches, simplifying the book borrowing process.
Benefits for Library Units:
The TouchNut software is expected to benefit three key units within the library. Firstly, the security unit will be able to efficiently monitor entry and exit, enhancing overall safety and control. Secondly, the circulation unit will have access to user profiles, allowing them to develop and assign identification cards seamlessly. Lastly, the management unit will gain complete oversight of library activities, ensuring smooth operations and enhanced administrative control.
Future Deployment and Expansion:
Following the successful pilot test run in the library, Professor Adenike Oladiji, the Vice Chancellor of FUTA, has expressed plans to deploy the TouchNut software in other relevant areas on campus, including campus shuttle transportation.
